Identifying Milestones
in the Schedule section there is a mention of milestone schedule, I find it very difficult identifying milestones. Could you provide me with guidelines to the process of identifying milestones or is that not relevant in this case?
Many thanks to Student S.
Milestones are placed in the schedule by the planner, like pins on a map. They are a way of identifying significant points in the plan. Sometimes they correspond to external events, like required delivery dates.
Think about when the work content will change in a significant way. Development typically involves Design, Construction and Test. Milestones could be used to mark the beginning and end of these groups of activities. Note: for overlapping workpackages, that's 6 milestones right there!
Think also about other stakeholders and what they might find relevant. A contractor who is heavily involved in the project (owns lots of tasks) asks: "when do you need my machines on your site, and when do you want them off again?" They are looking for two milestones in your schedule.
